Heermann's Gull: The Dark-Headed Beauty of Ocean Beach Shores
The Heermann's Gull (Larus heermanni) stands out among gulls with its unique smoky-gray plumage and striking white head in breeding season—making it one of the most distinctive and photogenic seabirds along the Pacific Coast. This medium-sized gull is a delight for bird watchers and photographers in Ocean Beach, San Diego, where it's commonly seen patrolling beaches, harassing pelicans for food, or loafing in flocks near the San Diego River mouth at Dog Beach and Sunset Cliffs.
In early March, many Heermann's Gulls are transitioning or lingering in nonbreeding plumage with smudgy dark streaking on the head, but breeding adults with their pearly white heads and vivid red bills are still prominent along San Diego's coast before most head south to nest in Mexico.
Why Spot the Heermann's Gull?
- Signature Behavior: Bold and kleptoparasitic, they often chase Brown Pelicans fresh from dives, trying to steal fish right from the pouch—creating exciting chase scenes perfect for action photography. They also forage by dipping into the water or scavenging along shores.
- Appearance: Unique dark gray body (almost smoky), white head in breeding adults blending seamlessly into the gray neck, bright red bill with a black tip, and dark legs. Nonbreeding birds show streaked heads, while immatures are sooty brown. Their sleek shape and direct flight make them easy to identify even in mixed gull flocks.
- Local Connection: Heermann's Gulls migrate northward along the Pacific after breeding in western Mexico, arriving in numbers along California coasts including San Diego by late summer/fall and lingering through winter into early spring. They're a reliable sight in Ocean Beach's coastal habitats, often associating with pelicans and other seabirds at the river mouth or cliffs.
Best viewing tips for Ocean Beach: Scan the skies and beaches at Dog Beach for their pursuits of pelicans—great for dynamic shots. At Sunset Cliffs, look for them gliding low over the waves or perched on rocks. Their bold behavior often brings them close to trails and viewpoints for excellent photo ops in soft coastal light.
Spotting a Heermann's Gull on your "Wings Over the Waves" trip adds a touch of drama and uniqueness to your coastal birding—its elegant contrast and feisty personality make it a standout favorite among Pacific gulls!
